BRADEN CAME awake with a jolt. He shook his head, rubbed his eyes, and stared blearily at his phone. Unfortunately, it was dead. He cursed himself for not plugging it in and looked up at the window. He jumped to his feet when he saw pale daylight filtering in. Shit!

Looking down at himself, Braden briefly considered stopping to shower, but the panic was already washing through him and he didn’t want to take the time. He paused only long enough to grab clean clothes and his backpack with his laptop, phone charger, and such before bolting out of the room.

He thought about running the four flights up, but better sense prevailed—along with a healthy dose of luck when an elevator opened as he ran past. He stepped onto the car and punched the number twelve button, then waited impatiently for it to move.

When he’d walked into his room the night before, he’d been yawning quite a bit. He remembered sitting down on his bed to give himself just a moment before he went to shower.

And he didn’t remember a single thing after that.

He must have passed out. He was annoyed as all hell at himself over it. He’d been so tired, he might not even have heard the door if Rafe had knocked. And if Rafe did come down, tried to get him to answer and he didn’t….

Braden closed his eyes and groaned. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!

He looked up at the numbers, willing them to change faster. By the time the doors opened on the Aloha Deck, Braden felt like he was about to jump out of his skin. He flew from the elevator, darted around the corner, and ran full tilt down the hall to Rafe’s suite. He was knocking almost before he skidded to a halt outside the door.

It took two tries before the door was answered, and as soon as it opened, without letting Rafe speak first, Braden did. “Fuck, baby, I am so sorry! I sat down when I got to my room last night, and before I even knew what happened, I fell asleep. Then my phone was off and I don’t know if you tried to knock, but if you did, I didn’t hear you, and I know you must have thought I didn’t want to come back or something. But I did, I just fell asleep, and I’m sorry, so, so sorry, I didn’t mean to stay all ni—”

Rafe leaned in and stopped the torrent of words with a hard kiss, full of tongue, and, Braden realized, relief. He’d been right to worry, but it seemed Rafe was accepting his explanation if the thorough examination of his tonsils was any indication.

When they broke apart, Braden looked up sheepishly. “You’re not mad, then?”

Rafe shook his head. “I’m just glad that’s all it was. Come on. Looks like you missed that shower.”

Braden would have glared if he wasn’t so relieved. And truthfully, he did still need the shower. When he stepped into the room, he glanced over and frowned at the time.
